NAACP Image Award Nominees Announced
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Talk show host Opray Winfrey will receive the entertainer of the year prize at the 22nd Annual NAACP Image Awards next month and disc jockey Casey Kasem will get a special humanitarian award.
″Ms. Winfrey is being honored for her outstanding achievements, talents and generosity. She exemplifies what the Image Awards stand for,″ NAACP Beverly Hills-Hollywood chapter President Willis Edwards said Wednesday.
Kasem was picked for his commitment to numerous social causes and ″continual effort to bring about an end to racial barriers,″ Edwards said.
Other special award winners include Rep. Ronald V. Dellums, D-Calif., Roy Wilkins civil rights award; performers Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis and Sammy Davis Jr., hall of fame awards; Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Jackie Robinson sports achievement award; and Digital Equipment Corp., corporate award.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also announced nominees for its competitive Image Awards. The winners will be announced Dec. 9 during ceremonies that will be televised on NBC-TV in January.
