Rival Horses Racing in Matriarch

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Happyanunoit and Tuzla, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Mile this month, face a rematch in Sunday’s $500,000 Matriarch on the turf at Hollywood Park after splitting stakes victories last summer.

Happyanunoit is coming off a four-length victory in the Vinery First Lady at Keeneland last month. The 4-year-old New Zealand-bred filly lost by a head to Tuzla in the Ramona Handicap at Del Mar after beating her by one length in the Palomar Handicap.

Brice Blanc will ride Happyanunoit for trainer Bobby Frankel. The filly has six victories in 11 career starts and earnings of $662,266.

Tuzla, trained by Bob Baffert, closed from far back in the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Gulfstream to lose by a neck to Silic. The 5-year-old is undefeated in five starts on Hollywood Park’s turf course. She’s earned $1.2 million, with 12 wins in 22 races. David Flores will ride Tuzla.

Frankel also will saddle Spanish Fern, who won the Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Santa Anita last month. She was third behind Tuzla and Happyanunoit in the Ramona with a neck separating her from the winner. Alex Solis will ride.
