JOSEPH BYRD “JOE” AMSBARY SR., 81, of Huntington, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, after a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, November 5, 2018, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Monsignor Dean Borgmeyer officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Born on July 30, 1937, in Huntington, Joe was the son of the late Margaret and Loren (“Jake”) Amsbary. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Jenny Hollandsworth Amsbary; three sons, Jake and wife Kimberly of Lake Bluff, Ill., Tim and wife Michelle of Reston, Va., and Paul and wife Jen of Hinesburg, Vt.; grandchildren, Ella Amsbary of Atlanta, Ga., Joseph and Caroline Amsbary of Reston, Va., and Magner and Eliza Amsbary of Hinesburg, Vt.; sisters, Joanna and husband John Brennan of Richmond, Va., Margaret and husband John McGarrity of Charleston, W.Va.; brother, David and wife Ann of Huntington; and several nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Va., and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Together with his father and brother, Joe owned and managed Amsbary-Johnson Clothing Store, a local haberdashery, until its closing in 1987 when he joined First State Bank as a mortgage loan officer. An avid golfer, Joe was a member of the Guyan Golf and Country Club, Gypsy Club and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
