Federal Funds Boost Fitchburg Community Investment

March 22, 2019

NewVue Communities Inc. in Fitchburg and the Coalition for a Better Acre in Lowell have received federal grants as members of the national NeighborWorks America network, a public nonprofit organization dedicated to community development in its collection of almost 250 local and regional nonprofit partners.

The announcement was made by U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, a Lowell Democat representing the 3rd District.

NewVue Communities is an organization focusing on the process of buying and maintaining a home. It provides down payment assistance programs and financial coaching as well as programs dedicated to making homes safe to live in. It received $221,000 in federal grants.

“Flexible funding from NeighborWorks America allows NewVue Communities to work in neighborhoods throughout North Central Massachusetts where residents choose to live, work and invest,” said NewVue Executive Director Marc Dohan.

The Coalition for a Better Acre received $232,000 to support its mission of creating affordable and accessible housing, economic opportunities and engagement of citizens.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the federal government -- including our supportive congresswoman and her staff -- to help thousands of Massachusetts residents make positive changes in their lives,” said Yun-Ju Choi, the executive director of the Coalition for a Better Acre.

Both organizations spoke of their support of Trahan’s announcement, but she maintained that the appreciation should lie with the nonprofits doing the good work. She said that as everyone deserves the right to “have a roof over their head” and live in a safe neighborhood, organizations like the Coalition for a Better Acre and NewVue Communities are especially important to keeping that cornerstone of the American Dream alive.

“I am proud to announce this important grant funding to organizations in our community that directly work to make that value a reality,” said Trahan. “Public-private partnerships like the ones supported by the NeighborWorks network are vital to developing our communities.”
