COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) _ Two men who crashed a weekend off-campus party face first-degree murder charges in the fatal stabbing of a University of Maryland student.

John Ryan Schlamp, 24, of Columbia, and Quan Lewayne Davis, 23, of Hanover were being held by Prince George’s County police in connection with the death Sunday morning of Brandon James Malstrom, 20. Schlamp was arrested and charged Sunday and Davis was charged Tuesday, police said.

Police said Schlamp, Davis and another man were thrown out of the post-homecoming student party at a house just blocks from the College Park campus.

They were looking for retaliation when they walked over to Malstrom and demanded his cell phone, authorities said. When Malstrom refused, Schlamp shouted, ``I’m going to kill you″ and punched him, according to court documents. Schlamp’s two companions joined the fight, and Malstrom was stabbed in the chest.

Neither Schlamp nor Davis was a student at the university. Police were searching for the third man but had no details Wednesday.

Sheila Schlamp told the Washington Post she had not seen her son since he was arrested.

``I know damn well my son did not go to College Park to stab someone from behind for a cell phone he’s had for years,″ she said. ``I really feel sorry for the kid. But I feel sorry for my son, too.″

Court records show Schlamp received one year’s probation before judgment in 1998 for assaulting state Sen. Edward J. Kasemeyer’s son at a party thrown at the senator’s Columbia home.

Malstrom graduated from Dulaney High School in Timonium and was a business major at the University of Maryland.
