Police seize data recorder from car involved in fatal crash at NCSU

November 1, 2018

Police are inspecting the data recorder from a car involved in a fatal crash last month that killed a Clayton man, according to a search warrant returned Tuesday.

Ian Geoffrey Shobel was eastbound on Hillsborough Street on Sept. 13 when his Toyota Corolla ran off the side of the road, struck a pedestrian crosswalk signal at the Logan Court intersection and then hit and killed Scott Timothy Racine on the sidewalk, police said.

Racine, 55, was doing work at North Carolina State University at the time, police said. The crash occurred about two blocks from the school’s Bell Tower.

Shobel, 30, of 3280 Lynn Ridge Drive in Raleigh, was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police are seeking evidence to illustrate the condition of the car and Shobel’s driving at the time of the crash.
