Alcorn State names Bussie to lead men’s basketball

April 24, 2020 GMT

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) — Alcorn State men’s basketball program has a new leader at its helm.

The university, in a news release Thursday, said Landon Bussie has been named as the team’s head coach. He replaces Montez Robinson whose contract was not renewed after the Braves went 15-15 this season and had just one winning season over five years. The team also has not won a Southwestern Athletic Conference title or been to the NCAA tournament since 2002.

“This is a dream come true of mine. My goal is to bring back the winning tradition. I will recruit a significant amount of student-athletes to help build a powerhouse in the SWAC. I will also set a goal for myself to have a 100 percent graduation rate,” Bussie said.

Bussie spent the last six seasons at Prairie View A&M as an assistant coach, helping the Panthers win regular season SWAC titles in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He also served as an assistant at his alma mater, Xavier University in Louisiana, for four years before going to Prairie View.
