Street, 2 Georgetown North businesses closed after gas leak
Two storefront businesses in the Georgetown area of Fort Wayne and a street were closed this morning because of a natural gas leak.
Emergency workers were called to the scene after a report at 9:34 a.m. that a construction crew had hit a gas line, said Brian Meeks, chief of Battalion 10 of the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
The closures came as a precaution because of recent incidents nationwide of gas leaks leading to explosions and fires, he said.
Georgetown North Boulevard was blocked and the co-located Recalibrated Christian Beauty and Barber College and BJ’s Barber Shop and the Meridian Title Corp. office were closed, although no gas was found inside the buildings, Meeks said.
Prior to the leak, a City Utilities water crew was working near the strip center, which occupies the rear of Wrigley Field Bar & Grill and other businesses along the north side of East State Boulevard east of Maplecrest Road.
Water could be seen bubbling up from one spot along Georgetown North Boulevard around 10:30 a.m., and a breeze occasionally carried a natural-gas odor.
