AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — A Republican backed by Gov. Henry McMaster has won a special election for an open South Carolina House seat.

Melissa Oremus faced no opposition Tuesday night for the seat in Aiken County left vacant when Republican state Rep. Ronnie Young died earlier this year.

Oremus worked in banking before opening a Monkey Joe’s children’s play place.

Oremus beat five other Republicans in a primary this summer. There was no Democratic opposition. She received 809 of the 831 votes cast in Tuesday’s special election with the rest going to write in candidates.

McMaster made a video supporting Oremus that was posted to her Facebook page after she won the Republican primary.
