October 7, 2017

A two-vehicle collision in North Augusta at approximately 7:04 p.m. Friday has claimed the life of a Harlem, Georgia, woman, according to a release from Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Ashleigh E. Hamilton-Mitchell, Carlton said.

Hamilton-Mitchell was the passenger in a Chevy Tahoe being driven by her sister-in-law Kristina Mitchell of Aiken. Other passengers in the Tahoe included the deceased’s husband Blake Mitchell of Harlem and a friend, 21-year-old Christopher Wilcher, according to a news release.

The Tahoe was struck by a 2015 Jeep Compass being driven by Grace Bates of Clarks Hill, the release said.

Bates was driving south on Highway 25 when she attempted to make a left turn from the center lane onto Johnson Road, Carlton said. She struck the Chevy Tahoe, which was traveling north, near the rear driver’s side door causing the Tahoe to overturn and ejecting Hamilton-Mitchell who was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver and passengers from the Tahoe were transported to the Augusta University Medical Center emergency department, the release said.

Hamilton-Mitchell was pronounced dead at 7:53 p.m., Carlton said. She died from multiple body trauma.

The driver of the Jeep Compass was not transported, the release stated.

The medical status of the other victims is unknown at this time.

This crash is being investigated by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Toxicology on the drivers is pending.
