Police Chief Killed by Suspect
VADUZ, Liechtenstein (AP) _ The chief of Liechtenstein’s criminal police unit was fatally shot as he tried to arrest a rape suspect, officials said.
They said Chief Heinz Hassler, 51, died at a hospital in neighboring Switzerland following the Tuesday shooting and that his assailant, identified as Reinhard Menches, escaped.
Police had been searching for Menches, a 32-year-old West German, since Friday when there were reports that a woman was being raped in his apartment. The officials said police were tipped that Menches had returned to his apartment Tuesday and that Hassler led a squad that went there at midday.
They said Hassler tried to open the door and Menches opened fire, hitting the chief.
Liechtenstein, a tiny principality sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria, has a 45-man security force with a dozen officers in the criminal unit.
