Detroit Lions hire Paul Pasqualoni, several former Syracuse coaches for new staff

Syracuse, N.Y. —Matt Patricia’s new coaching staff with the Detroit Lions will have a Orange influence.

Patricia has hired former Syracuse University head coach Paul Pasqualoni as the new defensive coordinator for the Lions.

Patricia, a Verona-Verona-Sherrill graduate, served as an offensive graduate assistant under Pasqualoni at Syracuse from 2001-03.

He was hired by the Lions as their new head coach on Monday.

Ex-SU assistant coaches Chris White, Brian Stewart and David Corrao will join Patricia in Detroit as well.

Pasqualoni comes to Detroit following two seasons as the defensive line coach at Boston College.

Pasqualoni was the head coach at Syracuse from 1991-2004. Pasqualoni’s 14-year run atop the Syracuse program ended with 107 victories (second-most all-time) and four Big East championships. Syracuse finished in the Associated Press Top 25 seven times under Pasqualoni. He was fired as Syracuse head coach in 2004.

Pasqualoni has previous stints in the NFL with the Houston Texans (2015), Chicago Bears (2014), Dallas Cowboys (2005-07, 2010) and Miami Dolphins (2008-09). He served as defensive coordinator for both the Cowboys (2010) and Dolphins (2008-09).

He also served as head coach at the University of Connecticut from 2011-13.

Corrao joins the Lions as Director of Football Research after spending the 2017 season as a senior player personnel analyst at Mississippi. He worked as the defensive coordinator at Northern Michigan in 2016 following eight seasons with the Miami Dolphins, where he assisted in coaching the team’s linebackers.

Corrao was an assistant coach at Syracuse from 2000-03.

White returns to the NFL as Lions’ Tight Ends coach after spending the 2017 season working with the University of Connecticut football program as the senior quality control director of football research and special projects.

White earned his start in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings from 2009-12 as an assistant special teams coach after serving in various capacities at Syracuse from 2000-08.

Stewart will serve as Defensive Backs coach with Detroit. He was an assistant coach at Syracuse in 2001. His NFL experience includes stops with the Philadelphia Eagles (2009), Dallas Cowboys (2007-08), San Diego Chargers (2004-06) and Houston Texans (2002-03).
