Seth Hopkins charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The subject of a search warrant that lead to the Oct. 3 shooting death of a Florence Police Officer and the wounding of three others and three Florence County Sheriff’s deputies has had an additional charge filed against him.
Seth David Hopkins, 28, was charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, according to a release issued by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office which has been charged with investigating the shooting and the events that led up to it.
“The investigation has revealed a second victim of sexual assault. Hopkins is charged with CSC 1st degree for sexually assaulting a minor under 11 years of age,” according to the release. “The incident occurred in Florence, SC between 2009 and 2010.”
All three deputies remain hospitalized, two in critical condition and one in stable condition, according to the release. One Florence officer remains in the hospital.
Florence Police Sgt. Terrence Carraway was killed in what was described as an ambush. He was buried Monday following a service at the Florence Center.
Officers from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office went to 932 Ashton Drive to interview Seth Hopkins and execute a search warrant when Frederick Hopkins allegedly opened fire and shot several police officers and sheriff’s deputies responding to the scene. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office’s MRAP -- an armored vehicle -- was used to rescue the wounded officers.
“Please continue to pray for the officers in the hospital,” according to the release on the additional charge.
The FBI’s Evidence Response Team along with Richland County deputies are continuing to process the crime scene in Vintage Place subdivision.
Frederick Hopkins Jr., 74, is charged with one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder in the attack, which covered an area that reached three blocks from the residence where deputies first went to serve the warrant. Florence Police officers responded mutual aid to the scene after the deputies came under fire.
Seth David Hopkins is also charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct which involved a girl 11-14 years of age, according to the arrest warrant.
