Signs with neo-Nazi slogan found near college campus
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Signs featuring the neo-Nazi slogan, “It’s okay to be white” have been popping up near a Maine college campus.
Bates College student body president Walter Washington says he reported the signs to police around 11:30 a.m. Sunday after being alerted to them by another student.
He says Lewiston police took down the signs not because of the language, but because they were attached to utility poles in violation of the city ordinance.
Washington says the signs were shocking especially in relation to the recent terror attack in New Zealand that has been linked to self-described white supremacist.
A Bates College spokesman says the school condemns “any attempt to incite hatred and bigotry based on race.”
It is unclear how many signs were put up.
