Vermont GOP Gov. Scott: abortion rights bill to become law

May 21, 2019

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A spokeswoman for Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott says a bill passed by the state Legislature that protects a woman’s access to abortion services will become law.

But Scott spokeswoman Rebecca Kelley tells MyNBC5 the governor hasn’t decided yet whether he will sign the legislation that was given final approval last week or allow it to become law without his signature.

The House recently gave final approval to a bill that writes into state law the right for a woman to receive an abortion.

The legislation is separate from a pending proposal to amend the state constitution to guarantee a woman’s right to an abortion.

Proponents say both measures are needed in the event the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe V. Wade, the case that legalized abortion across the country.
