BISD group to perform at ballroom nationals
Thanks to the power of social media, a group of 13 male salsa dancers from four Brownsville high schools has been invited to perform at the Cross Country Dancesport National Championships at the Marriott Marquis in Houston.
The performance is scheduled for today during the championship finals, Brownsville Independent School District fine arts administrator Rebecca Rendon said. The Fred Astaire national organization invited the group and is covering its expenses after seeing an early version of the performance on Facebook from last year’s Santa and Friends.
“The national organization is showcasing our group,” Rendon said at a rehearsal Thursday afternoon. “We have students here from four high schools, Hanna, Porter, Rivera and Veterans Memorial. It was a number from Santa and Friends, and somebody posted it on Facebook.”
That was in December. After the Fred Astaire people got interested, Rendon held tryouts, chose the 13 dancers and set up a rehearsal schedule. The students have been practicing an hour after school three times per week at Hanna, and crucially, during all of Spring Break. The group includes freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.
