Man badly injured in shooting
A man was fighting for his life after being shot inside a home on Pittsburgh Street around 4 p.m. today.
Dispatchers received several 911 calls about several gunshots in the area, and additional calls came in while police were en route, said John Chambers, Fort Wayne police spokesman.
Witnesses told police two men knocked on the door of the home at 3016 Pittsburg St. and “shot several rounds into the house,” Chambers said. The men then ran. Police do not have descriptions of the two men, Chambers added.
Police found the victim who was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Chambers said.
Investigators canvased the area speaking with neighbors to obtain additional information, he said.
There were reports of a vehicle leaving the area, but Chambers did not link any vehicle to the shooting.
A witness told The Journal Gazette he saw a green-colored Jeep drive up at the time of the shooting. At least two witnesses said they heard what sounded like 12 shots.
Several witnesses said the victim worked at the Marathon gas station on East Washington Boulevard nearby.
“He was so cool, he joked around and looked out for you,” one witness said. ”‘I got the change,’” he’d say if someone came up short, the witnesses said.
