Vermont police departments collect unused prescription drugs
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Police departments across Vermont are collecting unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to keep the drugs from being abused or misused.
The event on Saturday is held around the country every spring and fall. Last spring, Vermonters disposed of more than 6,000 pounds of medication.
Collection sites are open around Vermont on Saturday.
The Health Department says it’s important to properly store or dispose of prescription drugs because more than half of people who misuse them get the medications from a friend or relative, often from their medicine cabinets. It also says that flushing medications or throwing them in the trash is a danger to waterways and wildlife.
A number of police stations and pharmacies have collection sites that are open year-round.
