Authorities: Woman picking up husband from Edgecombe jail bit deputy while trying to hide drugs
A woman picking up her husband from the Edgecombe County jail on Sunday found herself confined there after deputies found drugs in her car and a deputy was bitten on the hand.
Rebecca Carter pulled up to the jail at about 1 p.m., followed by a State Highway patrol trooper who charged her with various traffic offenses, authorities said. The trooper put Howard in the front seat of his patrol car after finding a bag of marijuana in her car, and a deputy then saw her put something in her mouth.
The deputy squeezed Carter’s cheeks to stop her from swallowing the item, and she bit him on the thumb, causing bleeding, authorities said. The deputy drove to Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
Cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized from Carter’s vehicle, and more cocaine was found in her waistband during a search in the jail, authorities said. She also admitted to authorities that she swallowed a small amount of cocaine.
Carter was charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and assault on a government official.
