‘Defense Wins Championships’

February 10, 2019

Editor: Despite all the chagrin about the lack of scoring in the Super Bowl, let us remember that “defense wins championships.” From that perspective , this was a remarkably well-played game. If, like me, you appreciate defense, this was a great game, regardless of outcome. Congratulations to Bill Belichick (arguably) the greatest pro football coach of all time. The greatest player of all-time? How to call this? “Slinging” Sammy Baugh reshaped and redefined offense and largely created the “modern” passing game. With that, from my perspective, Jim Brown ranks as the greatest offensive player. Bear in mind how short the seasons were when he played, and his records are all that more remarkable. On defense, and for my money, the number one GOAT is Lawrence Taylor. He reshaped the game, including making us aware of how important a role offensive linemen play. Bottom line: A great game was played in Atlanta. Peter Wolman SHAVERTOWN
