Tractor trailer driver stuck under overpass charged with Westport hit-and-run

The driver of the tractor trailer that got stuck under an overpass on the Merritt Parkway in Norwalk during evening rush hour Thursday was charged with evading the scene of a crash by Westport cops.

Christopher Alexander, 43, of Charlotte, N.C., was charged with evading responsibility resulting in property damage or injury, police said.

Around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, commuters headed south on the Merritt Parkway were met with heavy traffic delays because of a tractor trailer that was stuck under the overpass near Exit 40 in Norwalk. Tractor trailers — among several other vehicles — are not permitted to drive on the parkway.

As crews worked to get the truck out from under the overpass, troopers shut down the parkway’s southbound lanes between Exits 41 and 40B.

Around 6 p.m., a dispatcher for Connecticut State Police told the troopers on scene at the overpass that Westport police were investigating a hit and run involving a tractor trailer that left the area at the YMCA in Westport. Initial dispatch reports indicated the license plate of the evading truck and the one stuck under the overpass were from different states.

By 6:30 p.m., the right lane of traffic reopened but crews continued to work. Within an hour, the highway was cleared and traffic was flowing as usual through the area shortly after.

Meanwhile, in Westport, officers continued their investigation at the YMCA of Westport/Weston. The officers learned a tractor trailer driver hit a tree, a sign post and an unoccupied parked car, dragging it out of its parking space, before leaving the scene, police said.

And shortly into the investigation, Westport police got surveillance footage that captured a partial registration plate of the tractor trailer allegedly responsible, police said.

“Westport police were notified by the state police that a tractor trailer matching the description of the suspect vehicle was stuck under an overpass on the Merritt Parkway just south of Exit 40,” Westport police said.

The investigating Westport officers responded to the Merritt Parkway and identified the driver as Alexander. He was placed under arrest and taken to Westport police headquarters where he was charged.

Alexander was held in lieu of a $500 bond. He was arraigned in court on Friday. There were no updated court records for Alexander available Friday.
