East Lyme water main break affects hundreds
East Lyme — Hundreds of homes have been shut off from municipal water, with hundreds more under a boil water advisory, after two water main breaks occurred on Route 1 near Flanders Four Corners on Wednesday evening.
The break occurred shortly after 4 p.m. after a 12-inch water main pipe burst by Pattagansett Lake and Lovers Lane on Route 1. Public Works Director Joe Bragaw said Wednesday night that a second break occurred as crews shut off valves to isolate the first, causing water pressure to burst a second pipe further up Route 1 by Upper Pattagansett Road.
As of 8:30 p.m., town public works crews and the utilities department were still working to fix the breaks, with repairs expected to take place throughout the night, Bragaw said.
“The hope is that water will be back in service by the early morning, hopefully before people have to get up for work,” Bragaw said. “The goal is to be back online by then.”
Water has been shut off to the following areas: Lovers Lane neighborhood, Ancient Highway neighborhood and all of Upper Pattagansett Road.
Bragaw said that homes on Boston Post Road and adjacent side streets from Lovers Lane to Flanders Four Corners, as well as those on Society Road, should boil their water for at least 2 minutes prior to use. He said customers also may experience discolored water, an issue that also won’t be fixed until the pipes are repaired and the water mains are flushed.
Limited amounts of bottled water are available for affected residents at the Flanders Fire Department until midnight.
