Maine university to discuss rationale behind name change
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s second-largest public university is holding a news conference to discuss the rationale behind its potential name change.
The University of Southern Maine is holding the conference on Wednesday. One option the university is considering is University of Maine at Portland. School officials say they’re still in the info-gathering phase and will present market research on the subject.
USM has about 8,000 students, including undergraduates and graduate students. The university is a major piece of the economy and culture of the state’s largest metropolitan region, the Greater Portland area.
The event is set to take place in the Glickman Library, which is located on USM’s Portland campus.
This story has been corrected to show the event is about the rationale behind the name change, not the name change itself.
