Expected Hot Weather Forces Time Changes

June 28, 2018

With extremely hot temperatures expected this weekend, along with a heat index that may climb over 100 degrees, District 16-31 Little League administrators decided to take a cautious approach for games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Rather than the typical doubleheaders scheduled for the afternoon at 2 and 4, administrators elected to start the games in the morning to get the players off the field before temperatures figure to be their highest. “When we saw what the temperatures were going to be this weekend, we got together as administrators and discussed what some of our options would be in regards to this weekend,” District 16-31 Administrator Bob Bertoni said. “We talked about what would be in the best interests of everyone involved. We continued to monitor the weather, and when we saw the reports that the temperature was going to be in the 90s with the heat index near or higher than 100 degrees, we made our decision.” A few years ago Bertoni was faced with a similar situation, and changed the start times of games to beat the heat. “It may be an inconvenience for some people, but the safety of the children is our top priority,” Bertoni said. “With how hot it is going to be, along with the heat index, that is not something myself or anyone on our staff takes lightly. After some lengthy discussions, we felt the best decision would be to change the time of the games.” All games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday will start no earlier than 9 a.m. and no later than 11 a.m. with the exception of a pair of softball games scheduled for Sunday. They will start at 6. Inclement weather on Wednesday forced the postponement of several games on the schedule. Those games have been moved to today.
