How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Wednesday
U.S. stocks closed mostly lower on Wednesday as traders considered weak retail sales data and some corporate earnings and deal news. Major indexes mostly drifted between small gains and losses. Technology stocks rose, sending the Nasdaq higher.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 7.74 points, or 0.04 percent, to 18,060.49.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slid 0.64 points, or 0.03 percent, to 2,098.48.
The Nasdaq composite rose 5.50 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,981.69.
For the week:
The Dow is down 130.62 points, or 0.7 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 17.62 points, or 0.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 21.86 points, or 0.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 237.42 points, or 1.3 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 39.58 points, or 1.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 245.64 points, or 5.2 percent.
