QUINCY, Mass. (AP) — The Quincy Police Department has suspended 20 officers because their gun licenses have expired.

Capt. John Dougan said the department checked licenses last week and informed the officers on Friday and Monday that they would be placed on paid leave until they renew their licenses.

The license check was ordered after a termination proceeding against a former officer that hinged on whether he could carry a gun.

The officers are only expected to miss a few days of work because the state firearms bureau has agreed to accelerate renewal requests for the department.

The department has 149 officers. Dougan tells the Patriot Ledger (http://bit.ly/VzqpVi ) the department is not concerned about staffing because officers can be reassigned or have vacation time canceled to cover shifts.
