Tuerff takes third, Stefanko fourth at state
La Porte County had a pair of medalists in Saturday’s Hoosier State Relays indoor track finals at Indiana University’s Gladstein Fieldhouse.
La Porte’s Riley Tuerff placed third in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.19 seconds. The Slicers senior, who had the top qualifying time, finished behind Warren Central’s K’Ja Talley (8.93) and Fort Wayne Northrop’s Morgan Patterson (9.12). Tuerff also ran in the 60-meter dash, taking 18th in 7.99.
Michigan City’s Ryan Stefanko claimed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Hayden Tobias of Fishers captured the title, his winning toss measuring 58-8 1/4. The Wolves’ Justin Wozniak was 22nd (44-5 1/4).
Among other local participants, LP’s Kayla Jones placed 10th in the long jump at 16-8 3/4, five spots ahead of City’s Naomi Ashley (16-4 1/2), and the Slicers’ Mitchell Gits came in 16th in the 3,200, clocking 9:34.4.
South Central pole vaulter Maggie Thomas cleared 8-6 to finish ninth, just outside the medals, in the Small School Division.
