GHS swim team defeats Danbury
The Greenwich High School girls swimming team started its season in impressive fashion, posting a 105-45 road win over Danbury in an FCIAC meet on Wednesday.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the foursome of Isabella Malchow, Emma Robinson, Caterina Li and Jenna Handali registered a winning time of 1:57.79.
Nicole Ragone gave Greenwich a first place finish in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 2:10.02. Teammate Caitlyn Well placed second in 2:14.64. Li was the 200 individual medley winner (2:17.27), while Handali touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (26.34).
Handali also took first in the 100 freestyle (56.86), while Malchow finished second (59.62). Danbury received winning efforts from Grace Lange in the 100 butterfly (1:02.22) and 500 freestyle (5:36.64).
The 200 freestyle relay saw Handali, Daniela Pompa, Lilly Bjerke and June Akpata finish first in 1:52.47. Greenwich swam exhibition following the 200 freestyle, but Olivia Baine of GHS had the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.28) and Li posted the best time in the 100 backstroke (1:03.26). Ragone, Robinson, Malchow and Li posted a time of 4:06.10 in the 400 freestyle relay for the Cardinals.
“Great debut for the team,” Cardinals coach Lorrie Hokayem said. “Our young team performed really well and has been training very hard. We’re looking forward to our next challenge against Glastonbury on Saturday.”
