Putting food on the table
McALLEN — The McAllen Crime Stoppers gave out 150 turkeys to area families Wednesday, the 16th year the nonprofit group has done so in conjunction with the McAllen Police Department as part of its Turkey Dinner Giveaway.
In addition to a free turkey, families received stuffing, gravy, vegetables and bread to complete their Thanksgiving meal.
“The McAllen Crime Stoppers program started this initiative to give back to our community for their continued support in fighting crime,” said Janell Garcia, the organization’s president.
Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said the program, which operates on tips from residents, “is vital to fighting crime” in the city, and he attributed the city’s decrease in crime to “the assistance of our community.”
Families were selected by McAllen police and McAllen Independent School District, and HEB helped donate food.
