Helotes and I-10 at Fair Oaks to see traffic backups

February 22, 2019 GMT

Drivers on the far Northwest Side will experience two significant road closures this weekend - technically, one starts Monday morning - that could make swift, efficient travel a bit difficult.

From 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, all main lanes on Interstate 10 will be closed in both directions at Fair Oaks Parkway for concrete placement work. Drivers will need to exit onto the frontage road, proceed through the intersection and then return to I-10.

Then, starting Monday and lasting for at least a month, Hausman Road in Helotes, formally known as FM 1560, will see back-ups as work crews do construction on a right-turn lane entering Bandera Road. That’s a narrow roadway and there aren’t suitable alternative routes, so expect delays.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Hernan Rozemberg said the right-turn lane work is needed before a much larger project, the widening of Hausman Road from two to four lanes, can begin.

That expansion, which will stretch from Loop 1604 to Bandera Road and begin in Spring 2020, will also bring raised medians and new sidewalks and bike lanes.

The two-year, $17.8 million project will feature a continuous two-way left turn lane, two five-foot-wide bike lanes, plus curbs and sidewalks along both sides of the road. The project has been in the planning stages since at least February, 2014, when TxDOT offered an open house to the public.
