Police identify man who died at Motel 6
Police have identified a Serafina man who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday at a Cerrillos Road motel.
Police responded for a welfare check at the Motel 6 at 3007 Cerrillos Road at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. According to a police report, officers found a man sitting on a hotel room bed holding a rifle. Minutes later, officers heard a gunshot, the report said. The man, who police said was “in crisis” but was not hostile toward officers or others, was later identified as Freeman Watson, 55.
Prior to gaining access to the room, police took detailed precautions to assess the situation — evacuating hotel guests; bringing in a crisis negotiation team, SWAT team and bomb squad; and diverting southbound Cerrillos Road traffic. Police deployed a camera-equipped robot to the outside of Watson’s second-floor room before officers breached the motel room window at about 3:30 p.m., when they found Watson dead.
A pet dog inside the room was unharmed, police said.
Serafina is about 50 miles southeast of Santa Fe.
