Glenville woman loses $2,500 in “sweepstakes” phone scam

GREENWICH — An elderly Glenville woman was conned out of $2,500 through a fraudulent phone scam.

The woman was promised $500,000 by a telephone caller, who told the woman she had won a sweepstakes event. The woman was told she could collect her “winnings” if she sent a check of $2,500. The theft was reported Sunday by a relative.

“The message is, if it sounds too good to be true, it is,” said police Lt. David Nemecek. He also said anyone who is contacted by phone about sending money should not act impulsively. “Talk to someone about it first,” he advised.
