Northwest Mississippi newspaper to be sold to growing chain
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — The owners of a twice-weekly newspaper in northwest Mississippi are selling to entities that already own five daily and two weekly newspapers in the state.
John and Rupert Howell say they’re selling The Panolian of Batesville to Boone Newspapers and Carpenter Newsmedia.
The Howells say they expect to complete the sale by Jan. 1. No price was disclosed.
Boone and Carpenter own the nearby Oxford Eagle , as well as the Natchez Democrat, Picayune Item, Vicksburg Post and Brookhaven Daily Leader. They also own weeklies in Poplarville and Prentiss. All those papers except Natchez have been bought since 2012.
Oxford Eagle Publisher David Magee would own part of The Panolian and become its publisher. He says the two newspapers can share resources and offer more products since they serve neighboring counties.
