Residents escape Los Angeles apartment building fire

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Neighbors pounded on doors and yelled for residents to wake up and get out as an early morning fire raged in a two-story apartment building in the North Hollywood area of Los Angeles.

Fire Department spokeswoman Amy Bastman says it took 87 firefighters more than a half hour to extinguish the blaze, which was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

A man who suffered burns and a woman with smoke inhalation were taken to a hospital. There were no details on their conditions.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the extent of the loss has yet to be determined.
