Tug sinks; all safe; Mississippi River closed at Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Mississippi River has been closed at Baton Rouge because a towboat sank at the anchorage there.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Brandon Giles says the Michelle Anne went under after hitting another boat’s anchor chain about 11 a.m. Thursday.
He says the four crew members all climbed safely onto the cargo barge it had been pushing and were rescued from it by a nearby tug.
A news release says a 1½-mile (2.4 km) stretch is closed while teams work to find the tug and check for pollution around the Baton Rouge General Anchorage.
Giles says 13 downbound and two upbound vessels were queued up by late Thursday afternoon.
