Harvey playing havoc with Tigers, Rams TIFI schedules

September 6, 2017 GMT

It’s bad enough that Hurricane Harvey and its unprecedented rainfall amounts has greatly affected the high school football scene, but when the storm starts messing with the pint-size football players, that’s way out of bounds.

For the second consecutive weekend last Saturday, Harvey and the massive clean-up that has followed has put a major dent in the Texas Intercity Football, Inc. (TIFI) schedule.

For the 15 teams, including the Deer Park Tigers and Rams, the historic storm has put their respective seasons on hold for the last two weekends. The teams got their respective campaigns under way on Aug. 19, but there’s been no football since.

Despite this past Saturday featuring sunshine for a very welcome fourth consecutive day, a combination of things caused the league to keep the 2017 on hold.

The Tigers were unable to play the La Porte Cowboys and the Baytown Broncos, one of three new TIFI squads this season.

The Rams had games with the La Porte Texans and the Pasadena Bears nixed.

These opening three weeks were also non-conference contests between the seven-team AFL and the eight-team NFL. Providing all goes well, conference play is scheduled to begin this Saturday for the 15 teams.

The Senior Tigers are 1-0 for the campaign so far, defeating the Rams 35-6 at Clyde Abshier Stadium on Aug. 19.

For the rest of September, the Tigers will be at home three of the remaining four weeks. They’ll host the Bears this Saturday (Sept. 9), followed by the La Porte Texans on the 16th. After a trip to the Bay Area Sharks on Sept. 23, the team returns home for a meeting with the Pearland Vikings.

October has the Tigers on the prowl with a game in Texas City on Oct. 7, followed by a much shorter trip to the Clear Lake Space Raiders on Oct. 14. The regular season concludes with a home game against the Barbers Hill Warriors, another new team on the TIFI schedule.

The Senior Rams meanwhile are looking at a third consecutive week of not playing football. Because the AFL Division has an odd number of teams, a bye date has been worked into their schedule and the Rams will be the first in the AFL to get their idle week. By regular season’s end, all seven teams will catch a bye date.

Finally, when the Rams do return to the field, they’ll be playing the Clear Lake Falcons on the road on Sept. 16. Then comes a home date with the Baytown Broncos on Sept. 23, the new team in the AFL ranks.

The team’s last four regular season contests will have the team traveling to the Dickinson Gators on Sept. 30, followed by back-to-back home games with the La Porte Cowboys and the Santa Fe Braves. They close with a trip to the Barbers Hill Eagles on Oct. 21.

In the Juniors game on Aug. 19, the Rams tamed the Tigers 18-8. The Sophomore game however saw the Tigers get the better of the Rams, winning 18-6. The Freshmen Tigers squeaked past the Rams 19-15, but the Pee Wee Rams blanked the Tigers 27-0.

The top eight teams in each division advance to TIFI’s postseason that leads to the annual Super Bowl, tentatively set for Nov. 11 at a site to be determined.

In recent years, the Super Bowl has been held at Dickinson High School’s new facility as well as at Barbers Hill High School.
