Akron-area comics vendors offer freebies, specials on Free Comic Book Day, May 5

AKRON, Ohio – There’s a comic-book extravaganza happening this weekend, with Summit County sellers offering enthusiasts free comics and big sales.

Comic stores in Akron, Kenmore and Cuyahoga Falls will be giving away comics in addition to hosting related activities.

Free Comic Book Day, which has been happening across the country for nearly 20 years, is celebrated at comics outlets across the United States. Cloaked in secrecy, vendors are prohibited from revealing the titles of the free books until Saturday.

Here’s what going on locally Saturday:

Rubber City Comics 74 East Mill St., Akron, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

With more than 50 different titles, Rubber City Comics will give out five free comic books per person. The store also will offer 20 percent off multiple DC Rebirth titles.

Rubber City Comics owner Scott Malensek will be signing copies of his new novel, “Money For Mayhem,” a Tom Clancy-inspired thriller based on true events and locations, featuring Akron and Cleveland. The book lists for $30 but will be soldfor $20.

Kenmore Komics & Games, 1020 Kenmore Blvd., Akron, open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kenmore Komics will start the revelry Friday night, May 4, giving one free comic book to every person who enters the store during Busk Until Dusk on Kenmore Boulevard from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Kenmore Komics will give five free comics per person, with Avengers movies comics available. The store also will host a back-issue sale on collectible comics in addition to a sale on trade paperbacks. A collection of 2,000 comic books will be available at 25 cents apiece.

JC Comics and Cards 2609 State Road, Cuyahoga Falls, open Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

JC Comics will give away 6,000 new comics, representing 40 different titles, with a limit of 10 per customer.

The first 200 people in the door will receive free custom bags to put the day’s swag provided by the TV Network and Akron Comicon. JC Comics also will debut two Free Comic Book Day pop figures -- “Lil Bombshells Harley Quinn” and the “Saga Bloody Lying Cat.” Quantities are limited. A store-wide sale will run throughout the day.
