Squantz Pond closed to swimmers for a week
Squantz Pond will remain closed to swimming until next Friday at the earliest, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
An unsafe level of indicator bacteria was found in the weekly water-quality test the state does on 23 state park swim areas, according to the state water report.
The next test will be Thursday with the results available Friday. The swim area won’t reopen until the test results show the bacteria levels are safe, said DEEP spokesman Dennis Schain.
Schain said the higher levels of bacteria tend to happen at inland sites when a lot of rain washes materials, such as animal feces, into the water from the shore.
