Historical marker will be unveiled in Florence
FLORENCE, S.C. – A marker will be unveiled Saturday afternoon to commemorate the designation of the 200-300 blocks of North Dargan Street as the Historic Downtown African-American Business District.
The marker will be unveiled after a 1 p.m. ceremony on the lawn of Ideal Funeral Home at 106 E. Darlington St.
Provided by the city of Florence, the marker acknowledges the importance and success of African-American owned businesses such as restaurants, barber shops, funeral parlors and pharmacies to the downtown area. Such businesses thrived during the era of segregation when the businesses there were the only option available to African-American residents of Florence.
The designation of the 200 and 300 blocks of North Dargan Street was initiated by the North Florence Community History and Heritage Initiative and was authenticated as a historic African-American business district by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
