Melania border trip sends message: Darcy cartoon

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The positive message of First Lady Melania Trump’s visit to a Texas shelter for detained migrant children became muddled by the mystery message on the back of a rain jacket she wore getting on and off the flight.

The First Lady boarded her flight to the Texas border wearing a green jacket with a message written in graffiti style on the back reading: “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?”

She didn’t wear the jacket when touring the detention shelter, but put it back on when she got off the return flight to Washington D.C., and kept it on as she walked into The Oval Office where she was seen with Kellyanne Conway and Mercedes Schlapp.

Was it just a jacket, with “no hidden message,” as the First Lady’s Communication’s director insisted?

Was Melania trolling her husband?  Was she trolling the press, as President Trump said in a tweet?  Or was she channeling Marie-let them eat cake-Antoinette, as one pundit on MSNBC suggested?

Melania Trump was trolling president with jacket message.

The First Lady had initiated the trip and it was planned before president Trump signed his Executive Order appearing to reverse his family separation policy.

President Trump had cited the influence of Melania and his daughter, Ivanka, in his signing the Executive Order.

In previous comments, Melania had showed concern and empathy for the migrant children separated from their parents that the president had not shown.

During her visit, Melania asked what could be done to help facilitate the quick reunification of the migrant families.

By pushing for the policy reversal, initiating the shelter visit, and with empathetic comments before and during the visit, Melania demonstrated she sincerely cared about the plight of the children.

I believe Melania was trolling her husband with the jacket message.  “I DON’T REALLY CARE, DO U?”  is President Trump, Stephen Miller, Anne Coulter and Laura Ingrham talking.  Melania getting on the plane to visit the shelters, at her own request, is her answering “Yes, I do care, and I’m showing you with this visit to a shelter you wouldn’t make.”

President Trump tweeted:

“I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media.  Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she not longer cares!”

The president’s tweet came after commentators in the press were speculating Melania was really trolling him.  And it came after the First Lady’s Communications Director, Stephanie Grisham, said nothing should be read into the jacket message.

“It’s a jacket, There was no hidden message.  After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.”

Some on social media suggested the jacket was a reference to the following lyrics from a Demi Lovato song:

“But even if the stars and moon collide, I never want you back in my life.

You can take your words and all your lies.

Oh oh oh I really don’t care.

You can take your words and all your lies.

Oh oh oh I really don’t care.”

Because it was 80 degrees when Melania was wearing the jacket, and she kept it on right into The Oval Office, Melania was clearly intending to send a message. But the move backfired, with the message being unclear, open to misinterpretation, going over the heads of people, and distracting from the positive purpose of her trip.

Another trip that deserves attention.

When Melania asked at the shelter what could be done to quickly reunite the families, she was sitting next to the Trump administration responsible for doing that, Alex Azar, Health and Human Service Department Secretary.

During the height of this humanitarian crisis, Azar took off work to attend his Dartmouth University class reunion.

Azar has been claiming that his department has been keeping track of the location and identities of the separated children and parents.   But there is already evidence that his department and the Department of Homeland Security have not kept proper track of the children and parents.

Trump says the Zero Tolerance Immigration Policy is still in effect.  So are the administrations Zero Tolerance for competence and basic humanity policies.

Melania should give “I REALLY DON’T CARE” flack jackets to her husband, Jeff Sessions, Stephen Miller, John Kelly, Kirstjen Nielsen and Alex Azar, because they deserve all the flack that’s coming at them.
