Following is a list of Memorial Day events happening this weekend in and around La Porte County:


Region 2 Abate of Indiana La Porte County Spring Breakout

La PORTE — Region 2 Abate of Indiana La Porte County Spring Breakout will be held Saturday at the La Porte County Fairgrounds, 2581 Ind. 2, La Porte.

Gates open at 11 a.m.

Ride leaves at 2 p.m. Ride stops at the VFW in Knox, 1611 S. Heaton St., Knox for a short memorial ceremony presented by the Indiana Fallen Heroes at the VFW. Free ride pins will be given to all veterans attending the ride. The ride includes a meal and returns to the fairgrounds for the party.


Ride, meal and party admission is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Kids 15 and under are free. Party only general admission is $10 per person or $15 per couple. Kids 15 and under are free. This is a family friendly event.

Lots of vendors! Featured is live entertainment with “Mysteria and Bill Russell Acoustic Show,” free camping, field events and games.

La Porte Memorial Day Ceremony planned

La PORTE — The annual Memorial Day Ceremony in La Porte will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater in Fox Park on Truesdell Avenue, La Porte. The event begins with a half hour of patriotic music performed by the La Porte City Band.

At 11 a.m., local veterans organizations, volunteers, speakers and others will honor the thousands from the community who have given the ultimate sacrifice in a moving program that will include a 21-gun salute, the playing of “Taps” and the presentation of wreaths representing each conflict over the decades.

The program also includes the reading of the names of veterans who have died within the past year. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the La Porte Civic Auditorium, 1001 Ridge St., La Porte.

VFW Post 9423 to conduct Memorial Day service

ROLLING PRAIRIE — On Monday Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9423 will conduct a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at their memorial located in Rolling Prairie by the school.

This year the theme is the American Civil War.

At 11 a.m. the veterans will lead a parade to the cemetery where they will conduct the VFW ritual memorial ceremony with a wreath laying, gun salute, taps and bagpipes.

After the service the VFW Auxiliary will serve a free lunch at the post. This service is sponsored in part by the Rolling Prairie Business Association.


Oak Grove Cemetery Wills Township Incorporated Memorial Day dinner planned

WALKERTON — The 74th annual Oak Grove Cemetery Wills Township Incorporated Memorial Day dinner will be held on Monday.

The Fish Lake American Legion will be having their service beginning at 10:15 a.m. at the cemetery which is located at CR-50N and CR-600E.

The luncheon will begin at 10 a.m. in the chapel which is located at the cemetery. Donations of double crusted pies, cakes and baked beans will be appreciated. Volunteer workers are needed. If anyone has any questions, contact Vice-President Carolyn Hunt at (219) 369-9565.

Wanatah Community Memorial Day Service

WANATAH – The annual Wanatah Community Memorial Day Service, hosted by Salem United Church of Christ and Koselke Mayfield American Legion Post 403 will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Salem Cemetery at U.S. 30 and County Line Road.

In case of rain, the service will be at Salem UCC in Wanatah.

MC Parade followed by cemetery ceremony

MICHIGAN CITY – Michigan City’s annual Memorial Day Parade will begin with lineup at 9 a.m. Monday at Pytynia Parkway near Ames Field. At 10 a.m., the parade will kick off and march north on Franklin Street, then east on Decatur Street to wrap up at Greenwood Cemetery for the Memorial Day Ceremony. The parade will pause for salutes at the WWI and WWII Circles and fire a single volley, with a final salute at the GAR Monument during the ceremony, led by the VFW Post 2536 Honor Guard.

Events at Greenwood Cemetery include a 10 a.m. concert by the Michigan City Municipal Band, followed by the ceremony at 11 a.m. to honor war veterans. It will include a posting of colors by the MCHS JROTC; an invocation by Robert Bailey, chaplain of American Legion Post 451; laying of a wreath at the GAR Monument; and an address by Stephan Williams, USAF (Ret).

Memorial Day tributes in Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY – Members of American Legion Posts 37 and 452, and VFW Post 2536 will honor veterans with a series of tributes on Monday. The day will start with a service at Swan Lake Cemetery at 7:30 a.m. conducted by members of Legion Post 37. Then at 8 a.m., Post 37 will be joined by VFW Post 2536 for a series of salutes in Washington Park, including the Spanish American War Memorial, Danny Bruce Memorial, WWI Doughboy Monument and Peace Circle Monument.

At 8:30 a.m. members of U.S. Coast Guard Station 274 will be joined by girls from Cadet Girl Scout Troop 331 for a special service starting at the Franklin Street Bridge. A Coast Guard vessel, with Girl Scouts on board, will travel upstream on Trail Creek to spread flowers on the water to honor Naval dead, ending with a gun salute from the bridge by VFW Post 2536.

At 9 a.m. the service will shift to the St. Mary’s Memorial on 10th Street, where Legion Post 451 will fire a gun salute; while DAV Chapter 23 and Legion Post 37 head to Scott Memorial Park on Gardena Avenue for the presentation of a wreath and a gun salute. At 11 a.m. a Memorial Day Mass will be said at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, wrapping up with a salute fired by Legion Post 451.

Pancake Breakfast and Blessing of the Boats

MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Yacht Club, MCYC Sailing School and Sea Scouts Ship 101 will host a Blessing of the Boats and Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, in the pavilion behind the Michigan City Yacht Club & Fish Camp.

Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. The event will honor lost sailors and bless local boats with a Memorial Service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Erika Kilbourne of the First Presbyterian Church of MC, and Retired Bishop Dale Melzcek, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Military Member Day at the zoo

MICHIGAN CITY — Military members will be honored with free admission all day on Monday, at the Washington Park Zoo.

Bring proper ID for active duty, retired military, DOD civilians and reserve/guard members for free admission to the zoo at 115 Lake Shore Drive.
