Street sweeping resumes this week in Huntington

HUNTINGTON — The Huntington Sanitary Board will resume street sweeping operations today, April 1, as part of an effort to minimize the impact of storm water on Huntington’s roadways and prevent pollution.

City officials remind residents that street sweeping is not a beautification effort, but rather a critical action to keep debris from entering the sewer collection system and treatment plant.

Council District 9 will be swept April 1-4, while Council Districts 7 and 9 will be swept April 5.

In each zone, residents and business owners will be notified 24 hours in advance via temporary street signs and will be asked to remove their vehicles from the roadway during scheduled street sweeping hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be an increased emphasis on issuing citations to vehicles that are not removed during scheduled operations.

Only curbed streets will be swept, and residents are prohibited from putting grass clippings, leaves and tree limbs in the street. Street sweepers will not remove these items.

Street sweeping will continue into November. The schedule will be set on a weekly basis, although it will be subject to change due to weather conditions.

This is the second year of a renewed three-year contract for street sweeping in Huntington. Since Contract Sweepers of Columbus, Ohio, began the residential service in July 2015, the company has swept 3,602 curb miles and collected 11.3 million pounds of debris.
