School Board will consider makeup day for Hurricane Michael

October 22, 2018 GMT

The Aiken County School Board will consider Tuesday a makeup day for the day students missed Oct. 11 because of Hurricane Michael at its regular meeting.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Aiken County Public School District’s office at 1000 Brookhaven Drive.

The district has recommended March 22, 2019, as the makeup date. Because that date is a scheduled teacher workday, school administrators will arrange for extended hours to makeup for that time, according to the meeting’s agenda.

Aiken County Public Schools have lost three days in September and October because of weather-related closings.

Students made the first day up Oct. 19 and will make up the second Feb. 18.

The S.C. Department of Education requires that the first three days missed because of weather or other conditions must be made up.

The department also requires school districts to designate at least three days in their school calendars to be used as makeup days.

In other business, board members will hear or consider items as follows:

• An update for the recruitment and retention committee

• The proposed 2019-20 budget calendar

• Local school board elective courses for 2018-19.
