Spokane’s Brooke Matson wins Jake Adam York Prize

March 9, 2019

Brooke Matson, executive director of Spark Central, has been awarded the 2018-19 Jake Adam York Prize for her poetry collection “In Accelerated Silence.”

“In Accelerated Silence” will be published by Milkweed Editions in February 2020, and Matson will receive $2,000.

About the collection, judge Mark Doty said in a press release “Inclusive, generous, both carefully observed and daringly philosophical, these poems reconfigure the elegy for this moment, praying to the ‘Dear wild unknown’ to ‘tow the borders of this universe far beyond our grasp.’ ”

The Jake Adam York Prize is awarded each year to a first or second collection.

Matson is also the author of the poetry collection “The Moons,” and her poems have appeared in Poetry Northwest, Potomac Review, Prairie Schooner, TAYO and Willow Springs.

Previous winners of the Jake Adam York Prize include “Scared Violent Like Horses” by John McCarthy and “Virgin” by Analicia Sotelo.
