Prep Boys Basketball: Sutherlin routs South Umpqua, 58-21, in season opener

November 30, 2017 GMT

SUTHERLIN — The Sutherlin Bulldogs came out firing in their season opener Wednesday night against South Umpqua, cruising to a 58-21 boys basketball victory in the Bill Spelgatti Invitational.

The Bulldogs are looking to go back to the OSAA Class 4A playoffs again this year. They took a step in the right direction against the Lancers.

Sutherlin jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and continued to build on that, moving ahead 36-12 by halftime.

Trevor Daniels, a senior guard, had 15 points and five assists for the Bulldogs. Mason Gill scored 13.

Senior Riley Westbrooks pitched in five points, five assists, five steals and seven rebounds for Sutherlin. James Bailey chipped in seven points.

“It was a great game, we worked great as a team and we came together,” Westbrooks said. “Coach (Willis New) did a great job keeping us all in line. The intensity was up. We were hitting our shots, and our defense was outstanding.”

“I think overall our energy was good. Defensively, we tried to get out and attack,” New said. “We allowed too much dribble-drive and have to be able to handle that. We play a lot of teams this year in league that have that and that’s going to be something that we have to control if we’re going to go very far.”

Issac Horn had nine points and seven rebounds for the winners. The Bulldogs had five players with seven rebounds.

“I was pleased with our rebounding. We were aggressive to the board,” New said.

Sutherlin played a solid game overall on defense, holding the Lancers to just eight field goals.

The Lancers were missing senior guard Johnathan Warner, who was on the bench in street clothes.

Matt Lee had six points, both baskets 3-pointers, to lead the Lancers.

Sutherlin continually pushed the ball in transition off missed shots or turnovers. There were several miscues, including missed layups and bad passes.

“We’ve got to hit a lay-in every once in a while,” New said. “We missed quite a few lay-ins. Again that’s first game kind of jitters, and being a little bit amped up. Hopefully, that will turn into a more productive outing.”

New, in the second season of his second stint at Sutherlin, coaches his players in more of an offensive system compared to allowing his players to play off dribble penetration.

“It’s real crisp, he doesn’t mess around,” Westbrooks said.

Sutherlin takes on a legitimate team in 3A De La Salle North Catholic, last year’s state runner-up, at 8:45 p.m. Friday. South Umpqua meets 3A Lakeview at 1:15.
