WA girl’s tennis performs well in tourneys
MT. PLEASANT-- Wasatch Academy (WA) girls’ tennis team made a strong showing at region and state tournaments this season with the hard work and leadership of first-year coach Sterling Whipple. The team took fourth place overall at the region tournament and a first doubles team took first at state.
With the combination of the 2A and 3A divisions for tennis this year, the team was matched up against schools several times larger than WA. Ines Schmid and Giulia Stocchino won the region championship in first doubles. Tenzin Norzom and Lucia Vilanova took second place in second doubles. Clista Galecki, Sophia Jessee, and Himari Yoneda took third, fifth, and eighth, in first, second, and third singles.
The state qualifiers represented Wasatch Academy well as they battled for every point possible at the state tournament. The second doubles team of Norzom Tenzin and Lucia Vilanova were able to battle past the first round but were overcome in the second round by the duo from Grantsville.
The first doubles team of Giulia Stocchino and Ines Schmid beat teams from powerhouse programs Morgan, Grantsville, and Judge Memorial to bring home the state championship.
When the team returned the team bus was met at the Wasatch Academy Victory Bell to celebrate the championship and the birthday of Giulia Stocchino.
