Watertown wrestlers defeat Oregon in conference dual
OREGON — Watertown’s wrestling team improved to 1-1 in the Badger South with a 48-21 dual meet victory over Oregon on Friday.
The Goslings received five forfeits — Nick Logan at 152 pounds, Danny Maule at 170, Miguel Herndandez at 195, Matt Brewster at 220 and Kollin Uttech at heavyweight.
“We won 48-21, but split the eight wrestled matches,” Watertown co-wrestling coach Bob Logan said. “Oregon outwrestled us on the whole. They came ready to battle and we got put on our heels early. This needs to be a wakeup call. We cannot take anything for granted and nobody is going to lay down for us. It’s early and we have a ton of wrestling remaining. I expect a strong rebound tomorrow at Waunakee.”
Emilio Hernandez won a 13-0 major decision at 106. Mason Fritsche won by fall in the third period at 113. Kolten Blome scored a 16-0 technical fall at 145.
Kasey Logan wrestled his first match of the season and won a 9-7 decision at 160. Logan gave up a first period takedown but turned Cooper King for three near fall points in the second period. King escaped and earned his second takedown for a 5-3 lead. In the third, Logan earned his first takedown. Then the two traded reversals with Logan breaking a 7-7 tie with two near fall points for the final margin.
Oregon posted three pins and one decision. At 126, Michael Schliem pinned Walker Wichman at 3 minutes, 51 seconds. At 132, Steele Mellum pinned Edward Wilkowski at 4:00. At 138, John Ruth pinned Edwin Urbina-Cruz at 2:41. Robbie Ruth scored a 1-0 decision over Tanner Nachtigall at 182.
Wichman (5-2) was trailing 9-0 at the time of the fall, having given up a takedown and five backs points in the first period before giving up a reversal and eventually the fall with nine seconds left in the second period.
Wilkowski (6-1) scored the opening takedown but gave up a reversal as the match went into the second period tied 2-2. Mellum scored a takedown early in the second period and Wilkowski escaped, but Mellum took him down again and scored three near fall points before earning the pin at the buzzer.
Nachtigall was ridden out in the second period and lost on a third period escape.
Watertown competes at the Waunakee Warrior Invitational today.
