Suspected sex offender released on bond
A man accused of exchanging nude photos with a 12-year-old girl was released from jail Friday on $25,000 bond.
The case began in September when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies contacted the Lake Havasu City Police Department. Deputies allegedly identified Havasu resident Christian R. Chavarin, 20, as the suspect in its investigation into a California juvenile who had received nude photos of Chavarin on social media, and requests for her to share similar images through Facetime, Instagram and Snapchat this June.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of Havasu police in following up on the investigation. According to the police report, Chavarin and the victim allegedly first contacted each other after he “liked” a photo of hers on Instagram. During online conversations that followed, the victim allegedly told Chavarin numerous times that she was 12 years old.
Chavarin allegedly sent the victim nude photos of himself, and asked her to do the same. Throughout their conversations, his requests became more explicit, according to police. He was allegedly identified through his Instagram and Snapchat accounts, and copies of Chavarin’s messages and photos to the victim were given to the Lake Havasu City Police Department.
Officers arrived at Chavarin’s Daytona Avenue address on Dec. 12, where he was asked to speak with detectives at the Lake Havasu City Police Department. He was interviewed by detectives the following morning, and allegedly expressed confusion as to why he was asked to be there.
Chavarin was questioned about the victim, and allegedly denied knowing her, until he was allegedly confronted with information gathered by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. According to the report, Chavarin said he was aware of the victim, they talked occasionally, but “it wasn’t anything serious.”
He allegedly told detectives he didn’t remember sending photos to the victim, nor did he remember asking her to do the same. When detectives said they had copies, he allegedly admitted to the act.
According to the report, Chavarin said he believed the victim to have been about 17 years old. It was a statement again challenged by detectives, and retracted by Chavarin, according to the police report. He allegedly said he believed the victim was older than she said she was, based on her appearance.
Chavarin was arrested at the scene and booked into Mohave County Jail on charges of aggravated luring a minor for sexual exploitation and furnishing obscene material to a minor.
