Editor, Daily Times:
Instead of running the government as they were elected to do, politicians are hijacking the country by shutting down the government. Government workers, and the poorest and most vulnerable and eventually all of us are held as the hostages. Shutting down the government is becoming more and more common and accepted as a political tactic to bully Congress into passing policies that can’t pass by democratic constitutional methods.
To prevent government shutdowns I suggest a law requiring the budget to be passed six months before the money runs out. If politicians don’t meet the deadline, they receive no salary until they do. If the government does shut down they all lose their pensions.
