Man pleads not guilty to killing au pair, her boss
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man has pleaded not guilty to charges of killing the au pair he was dating and her boss who owned a New York City comedy club.
A judge on Wednesday ordered 27-year-old Joseph Porter of Elizabeth to remain held pending his trial.
Prosecutors say Porter stabbed 40-year-old David Kimowitz in his Maplewood home on Aug. 3 and then stabbed 26-year-old Karen Bermudez-Rodriguez as she tried to flee. Investigators say texts showed she had tried to break off their relationship about an hour before Porter arrived at the home.
Bermudez-Rodriguez had given Porter a key to the home.
Porter was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport as he attempted to fly to Cancun, Mexico.
Kimowitz owned The Stand Restaurant and Comedy Club in New York’s Union Square.
